We chose ‘Metta’ as the name for our gluten-free flour since it means ‘loving-kindness’ in Pali and because it was created out of love for family, tradition, and because taste and texture do matter!
Metta Gluten Free Atta was inspired by my son who was diagnosed with a gluten sensitivity when he was eight years old. This meant no more Indian flatbreads, or rotis. A staple in North Indian cuisine, rotis are traditionally made from whole wheat flour (atta means flour in Hindi, an Indian language). Metta GF was developed after many years of trial and error to get just the right taste, look and feel like traditional wheat rotis. As a vegan and plant-based diet advocate, nutrition was also very important. Metta GF is made with nutritionally rich, non-GMO ingredients like sorghum, teff, and flaxseed, while avoiding other common allergens like corn, soy, eggs, dairy, and nuts.
Metta Gluten Free Atta works great for all kinds of traditional Indian breads like puris (fried) and parathas (stuffed). It is also versatile enough to use for non-Indian cooking and baking, e.g. pizza crust, pancakes, waffles, and the most decadent brownies, cookies, and muffins! The list continues to grow through customer feedback. Check out all our recipes on the website here.
